Tech I.T. Up- Overview and status
Tech I.T. Up is a technology education program designed for children. It seeks to provide exposure to informational technologies with a hands on approach in a fun and uplifting environment. We provide the tools and resources to explore concepts in reverse engineering that gain knowledge of how and why technology exists and works. By utilizing muscle memory and clear goals with proper guidance, we hope to instill talents and skills that they can develop for a lifetime.
The idea occurred to me as I realized what started my path down a career in Information Technology Support. As a young child I would dismantle radios, toasters, alarm clocks, anything electrical. I was curious what made these systems work. At 8 years old I received my first computer for Christmas, a Commodore 64. Sometime later, I was attempting to code a program and fried a chip and it died. My mother took us to a local computer repair shop, and I parted ways with my treasured friend, with hopes he could revive it. He did, and I was in awe. I wanted to know and do what he did.
The curriculum starts by dismantling and then rebuilding a computer. Along the way we identify and discuss the functions of each component. Topics cover electrical concepts, machine language, circuitry, and general functionality of each component. By taking the computer apart the reassembling it, the students gain confidence in the ability to work with hardware. Future classes have been discussed for coding, software, and network design.
With a partnership with Palisade United Methodist Church, we were able to create a safe environment for children. This space is Covid compliant and inviting for learning and activities. With donations from local residents and businesses, we have enough equipment to provide workstations for 9 children. Classes have started and we look forward to having the resources to provide for more.
I look forward to the advancement of this project and if anyone has donations they wish to contribute, or a student they wish to sign up for future classes, please contact myself or Palisade United Methodist Church.
A waiting list has been formed for next months classes. If you have submitted a signup form please stand-by for a confirmation letter.
